What Ever Happens, Will Happen Today
a friend at the radio station told me, on Friday, that i had to listen to that new CD by Dave Byrne and Brian Eno... and get a copy, quick.
considering that the first time i ever heard "alternative" or "underground" radio, i heard Another Green World by Brian Eno on WGTB, from Georgetown University. at first, i thought it was Gas Music From Jupiter, as i'd never heard anything like it, before.
Hell, at that point, i didn't know what "college radio" was, either.
so, i relented. only, i didn't think about listening until this afternoon.
i had a reason.
only last Thursday, i got my car back from the body shop... repaired after a pretty resounding thump in the rear end in northern Virginia kamikaze traffic. everything was back in order, except for the upside-down windshield wiper... which wouldn't work until i fixed it. but, all systems were "Go". or so i thought.
after a harrowing Sunday of roof repair, beer-making, clothes washing, and preparing food for the week, i was knackered by this morning. yet, i still had to do my usual chicken-with-its-head-cut-off packing and embarking for my dwindling days left at work.
and, it was good: my own car, my own music, my own pace, and i could even smoke in the car, unlike the rental.
until i set wheels on route 50, however.
i started to smell this acrid aroma, though the open window. it could have been from some construction just to the side of the road... because, surely, if i was smelling it, it was in front of me. oh, yes, it was.
just a mile further, all of the warning lights flashed on the dashboard, and smoke rolled in the passenger compartment. i imagined having to stamp out burning wiring, until, at the first opportunity, i pulled off... at a gas station. i popped the hood, smoking at the seams, and witnessed my alternator on fire. the hilarious procedure of blowing on it was useless, so i ran to the shop to borrow wrenches to disconnect the battery, lest the whole thing go up in flames.
looking skyward, i lamented: "Why, O, Omnipotent One... again? penance? punishment? more tribulations for a reason? have not the experiences of the last year been sufficient to put me in my place, and into the place of re-evaluation?"
they tell me that everything happens for a reason. i just need a clue.
regardless, the folks at the gas station were kind enough to lend me those wrenches, and didn't give me a hard time when i told them i needed to have it towed to the Volvo shop, instead of giving them the chance to burn me for repair.
i got a tow truck in a half-hour, only a twenty mile drive to the shop.
the shop, still open.
the rental agency, also.
my toes might still be cold from the wait, but, i'm back home.
the song, "Home", the first track on What Ever Happens, Will Happen Today.
the first song i heard when i popped the CD in the stereo.
yes, it all happened, today. but my resume is complete, as of minutes ago.
it's sent to my first real opportunity.
What Ever Happens, Will Happen Today.
no shit.
